Juneteenth celebrations across Texas in 2022

Juneteenth events near you celebrating Black history, art, and excellence.

On June 19, 1865, over two years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to announce and implement the freedom of all enslaved people. That day, over 250,000 Black people were freed from slavery in Texas.

Now known as Juneteenth, the holiday commemorates the freedom of Black Americans, celebrates Black history, art, and culture, and reminds us of the progress yet to be made toward racial justice. While Juneteenth has been celebrated in Texas and throughout the U.S. since 1865, it was only last year that the day was finally recognized as a federal holiday after the passage of the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act. Juneteenth became the first new federal holiday since the establishment of Martin Lurther King Jr. Day in 1983.

Below we’ve compiled a lineup of Juneteenth events happening across the state over the next few weeks. While there are plenty of parades, festivals, and markets, this list is in no way comprehensive. Make sure to check out local event listings to see what’s happening near you!
