Presidential Nominee Debate Night, Part 2 is here! It’s been an electrifying election cycle and it’s time again with the new Democratic nominee fresh from the DNC, Vice President Kamala Harris, to face off against fact-checker-breaking, defrauder and convicted felon, and former President Donald Trump. That’s a mouthful!
You can watch the livestream on ABC News Live, Disney+, and Hulu. The debate will be moderated by ABC hosts David Muir and Linsey Davis on Tuesday, Sept. 10, at 8 p.m. CT in Philadelphia. What’s different this time?
The candidates: Harris and Trump have never debated each other. If you want insight into how she performs against conservative opponents: look no further than her 2020 debate against Trump’s former VP, Mike Pence. There, she stood her ground, pulling from her background as a prosecutor and didn’t let him steal time away from her answers, saying: "Mr. Vice President, I'm speaking. I'm speaking."

Meanwhile, Trump will likely keep up the same schtick of barrelling lie after lie, to avoid fact-checking. According to Roderick P. Hart, a political rhetoric scholar with books on Trump’s style, the former President is known for using terms related to anger and hurt (5 times as much as the political norm), and drawing on feelings of being ignored, of being trapped, of being besieged (by elites and outsiders), and of weariness (with the political establishment).
You can expect him to discredit Harris’ name, heritage, and achievements like drawing huge crowds because he’s bothered by her popularity and because it achieves that sense of distrust and paranoia against Democratic leaders that he depends on. That’s why you can also expect to hear him repeat himself, often, and for him to fear-monger — spouting lies about voter fraud, Jan. 6, and how he has the election in the bag with supporters who might refuse to certify election results. Four years later, we can expect all this and more, minus the threat of either talking over their time because, as Trump demands, the mics will stay muted for the second 2024 Presidential debate.
What are the ground rules?
No audience. No live mics. No notes.
This debate was initially supposed to feature President Biden, agreed upon by his and Trump’s team that they would do the first debate, which as we know prompted Biden’s departure soon after, then another planned for Sept. 10. Harris is keeping up her end of the deal, but both candidates’ teams have argued about the CNN holdover rules from the first debate — specifically about muting microphones when candidates were not speaking. Both teams have agreed to the set rules, and now we wait.
