Supreme Court Rules Trump Order, from Day One of Second Administration, Unlawful

Upon America’s 250th, a People-Powered Government is Protected

TEXAS – Today the Supreme Court rejected (6-3) the unconstitutional Trump Executive Order attempting to uproot a core Constitutional promise: that persons born on U.S. soil are guaranteed the right to citizenship, with limited exceptions.

In her opinion, Justice Jackson pointed to the origins of the 14th Amendment and the Citizenship Clause. At the time, it was written to ensure freedmen and freedwomen could open the doors to democracy, embedded in the bedrock of our country’s contract so others could later benefit and inherit this American promise of liberty and justice for all.

“Trump signed this unjust order on Day One, and the Supreme Court has denied him, for the third time, total tyranny over our inheritance, over our nation of laws,” said Progress Texas Executive Director Kathleen Thompson.

“On the cusp of America’s 250th anniversary, this decision defends that we are a government of laws and not of men. But we are also fundamentally a nation of immigrants. As Frederick Douglass once said, ‘a diverse origin does not disprove a common nature, nor does it disprove a united destiny,’” said Advocacy Coordinator Tatum Owens.
