On April 10, Muslims around the world will be celebrating Eid-al fitr. This holiday is an important Islamic event marking the end of Ramadan, the holy month of fasting. As progressive Texans, we stand in solidarity with our Muslim neighbors and join them in celebrating this joyous occasion. With Texas having the fifth largest Muslim voter population, standing as allies with our Islamic community is crucial now more than ever.
Eid al-Fitr, often referred to as simply Eid, is a time of gratitude, reflection, and community. After a month of fasting from dawn until sunset, Muslims gather with family and friends to break their fast and express gratitude for the strength and spiritual growth attained during Ramadan. It's a time of feasting, giving thanks, and reaching out to those in need through acts of charity and compassion.
Austin city council member Zohaib Qadri told Progress Texas, “I am very thankful for progressives when they stand with the Texas Muslim community on major issues. But the thing that’s harder to combat, and harder to see if you’re not experiencing it, is the insidious day-to-day Islamophobia many face. It’s also important to note that in many of the most conservative areas of the state, (and in some liberal places too) the wave of anti-Muslim sentiment post 9/11 never really went away.”
At its core, Eid is about unity and solidarity. We recognize the importance of fostering understanding and building bridges across communities. Eid serves as a powerful reminder of the strength that comes from embracing our differences and standing together in solidarity. We’ve compiled a list of Eid events and festivities in Texas for those who celebrate!
As we celebrate Eid with our Muslim friends and neighbors, let us stand up against bigotry, discrimination, and Islamophobia in all its forms and strive to create a Texas where everyone, regardless of their background or beliefs, can thrive and find belonging.
