The countdown to the all-important 2026 midterm election hits 84 days today. Meanwhile, the registration status of over one million potential Texas voters has been placed under suspicion by Texas election officials, potentially interfering with their ability to vote this fall—and the vast majority probably have no idea.

Sarah Bahari at The Dallas Morning News writes that over 1.2 million Texans are currently on the state’s suspense list. Suspense is an administrative designation that typically occurs when official mail, such as voter registration cards, returns as undeliverable. This means extra friction at the ballot box, as there are administrative obstacles that are triggered for a voter in suspense—never something you want to introduce into the situation, especially on Election Day—but, voters under suspense do retain their fundamental right to vote. It’s a lot better to clear this up prior to the deadline of October 5—if you’ve been on this list for a while, anywhere near two general election cycles, you’re close to being kicked off the voter rolls altogether. Use the link in Sarah’s article to check your status—if you see the word “SUSPENSE”, all of this means you, and you need to handle it quickly.
