“Protecting LNG” Puts Profits over People

Port Arthur Approval Marks a Catastrophic Turning Point

TEXASProgress Texas condemns fast-tracking the authorization of liquefied natural gas exports at the Port Arthur LNG facility. This is the first-final LNG export green light by the Department of Energy under President Trump—which puts pollution-driven, corporate profits before the people he claims to serve.

In lockstep, Senators John Cornyn and Ted Cruz, have reintroduced “The Protect LNG Act,” which would demolish opportunities for legal recourse, and rubber-stamp the quick, and irreversible permit approval process: ensuring that LNG facilities can start flooding nearby neighborhoods with toxic compounds as quickly as possible.

“The permitting process is one of the few protections left to slow the bulldozing of nearby residential neighborhoods and without protections to public health and ecosystems—highly-explosive, hazardous methane gas will line and devastate our Texas coast line and communities,” said Advocacy Manager Reagan Stone. “These projects are not the will of the people and will never benefit Americans. Instead, we should expect higher electric prices and billions to flood the top one percent.”

Advocacy and Development Coordinator Tatum Owens said, “The LNG industry in Texas has international repercussions. That’s why we are witnessing a simultaneous move, federally and on the ground with construction underway, to accelerate these projects, despite the long-lasting wounds left on local communities and land. The people funding these projects don’t care about what happens to you, they just care that the facility gets approved, starts exporting as quickly as possible, without your input or lawsuits, and at the expense of your health, home, and community.”
